My Opera is closing 1st of March

Barely scratching the surface

The AJAX phone

, , , , ,

Would you like to get personalized and always updated newsfeed directly on the idle-screen of your mobile phone? How about location based traffic information or a map service similar to Google Maps? This is what Opera, Telenor and FAST set out to test in a R&D study named 'Aida' earlier this year. The solution was tested on a large number of end users over many months and was very well received among the testers. Check out the video below from the solution running live on a Windows Mobile phone.

If you have problems understanding the text on the screen, it's most likely because it is in Norwegian wink

Off to VegasWii wish you a merry christmas!

That's a great Idea, I had a similar concept based on the New York City Metro System, tracking time delays and schedules for busses and trains. Great to see this work there gives me a push on my concept can't wait to see what's next!

BTW: The AIDA project was build using Opera Platform, which is an AJAX framwork running on top of the Opera Mobile browser. This is such not based on the light-weight Opera Mini browser.

Anonymous writes: Great idea. I was looking for something similar for Symbian S60, however some available solutions (e.g. I've tested Onskreen's Fusion) IMO are a bit immature (too slow, user added RSSs not correctly parsed, not possible to read the full feed without invoking the broswer, and worse of all, such browser cannot be chosen by user, e.g. it happens to be the default one). I'm confident that Opera team is doing it in the right way, coupling the terrific Opera browsing performance and UI on mobile device with rich user customization. It would be great to have the desktop RSS widgetize concept also on a smartphone. Hope to see it soon for Symbian S60 (v2 also, not only v3).

Anonymous writes: What does that UI all mean. It doesn't make any sense? A bunch of line listings for traffic?

Jan StandalThink Sunday, January 14, 2007 4:54:55 PM

It's not UI, its multiple widgets running at the same time. But as I said it's a Norwegian reading exercise smile

That is a really wonderful idea. I tried to apply it while I was doing some research form my IT project on telecommunication and it worked great. Thanks for the video and sharing!

I like the idea so much, also the idea of metro system adopted for mobiles seems to be a great solution. Mobile internet may be still a bit expensive for common folk, but the attitude and prices will change very fast and such solutions will be of grat value to enhance the progress even more.
